Le film suit Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) alors qu'elle est emmenée de son orphelinat par le BFG et emmenée au pays des géants où elle risque immédiatement d'être mangée par les autres géants plus grands, dont Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) et Bloodbottler (Bill Hader).
Ensemble, Sophie et le BFG partent à l'aventure au pays des rêves où ils capturent des rêves pour le BFG afin de les offrir à tous les enfants endormis du monde humain.
Après avoir élaboré un plan astucieux, le couple retourne à Londres pour voir si la reine (Penelope Wilton) peut les aider à s'attaquer au problème des géants intimidants et mangeurs d'enfants.
