Confrontés à une crise de carrière, Sharleen Spiteri et son partenaire d'écriture Johnny McElhone ont commencé à bricoler leur son et à utiliser la technologie moderne.
L'album White On Blonde de 1996, qui a connu un énorme succès, et une ruée de chansons à succès. "I Don't Want A Lover", avec son riff de slide fatigué, ne s'est pas bien passé, pas plus que les autres chansons d'avant le tournant comme "Everyday Now", "So-Called Friend" et "Prayer For You". Néanmoins, il existe une douzaine d'exemples de Motown stylisés et mis à jour ("Say What You Want", "Black Eyed Boy", "When We Are Together") mettant en valeur la renaissance de l'écriture de chansons du groupe.
