Recorded live in Birmingham during a Contemporary Music Network tour in 2002, Tramonto captures UK pianist John Taylor (1942–2015) in a vibrant, celebratory mood, leading one of his most dynamic trios. Joined by acclaimed US musicians Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums—the same team later featured on the ECM release Rosslyn—Taylor delivers an electrifying performance that showcases his creative brilliance and deep musical intuition. The album features standout renditions of Taylor's well-known compositions "Pure and Simple", "Between Moons", and the epic 15-minute version of "Ambleside", alongside the Ralph Towner-penned title track and Steve Swallow's "Up Too Late", which evolves from bop phrasing into free improvisation, highlighted by Johnson's arco solos and Baron's skittering drum work. A powerful testament to Taylor's artistry and the trio's telepathic interplay.
