The Blue Max (1966) - DVD

John Guillermin directs this adaptation of the novel by Jack D. Hunter. During World War I, the Blue Max was the Luftwaffe's most coveted honour. Combat pilot Bruno Stachel (George Peppard) is determined to add it to his collection of awards, whatever the cost, even if it means betraying his own squadron. The film offers a rare perspective by focusing entirely on the German side of air combat in the Great War, weaving a cold, cynical narrative around ambition, class, and propaganda. Supporting performances come from James Mason as a pragmatic general, Jeremy Kemp as a rival officer, and Ursula Andress as a decadent countess entangled in Stachel's rise. The film is renowned for its epic production values and stunning aerial dogfights, presented with breathtaking cinematography.
