Description

Saxophone Colossus is a landmark jazz album by Sonny Rollins, originally released in 1956. This CD features the influential recording that helped establish Rollins as a major figure in jazz.

Rollins’s hard-swinging invention, humour and tender balladry are joined by Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Max Roach on drums. Their contributions shape the album’s distinctive sound.

Standouts include “St. Thomas”, the West Indian melody that became a jazz standard after Rollins introduced it here, and “Blue 7”, featuring musical accompaniment and soloing from Max Roach.
