The album marked a bold shift toward distorted guitar tones and glam rock influences, capturing the urgency of the mid-'90s alternative scene. Highlights include the distortion-soaked first single, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", a commentary on media and marketing in Gen X pop culture, and the catchy "Star 69", inspired by the 1990s phone service of the same name. The second single, "Bang and Blame", features Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and actress Rain Phoenix, whose brother River Phoenix was the album's dedicatee. "Let Me In" stands as a heartfelt tribute to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who passed away months before the album's release.
