Mauricio Kagel: Exotica

Explore the groundbreaking chamber music of Mauricio Kagel with his 1971 vinyl release, 'Exotica'. Born in Buenos Aires and later a prominent figure in European avant-garde music, Kagel (1931-2008) crafted works that were both deeply reflective of their time and remarkably forward-thinking.

About 'Exotica'
'Exotica' is a vibrant and humorous five-act composition that masterfully critiques the cultural landscape of the early 1970s. As global musical influences became more accessible, Kagel ingeniously incorporated over 200 instruments from around the world, including sitars, gongs, bamboo flutes, and gamelans. This piece, while playful, uses humor as a powerful tool for commentary, drawing parallels to the works of Shakespeare and Beckett.

This album stands as a testament to Kagel's innovative approach to chamber music, blending diverse sonic textures and cultural references into a cohesive and engaging auditory experience. It reflects the era's fascination with global sounds while Kagel's unique compositional voice elevates it beyond a mere collection of exotic instruments.
