New York Review Books Heidegger Thinking: Being and Time Explained - Simon Critchley

An intelligent yet approachable guide to the core concepts of Martin Heidegger’s seminal work, Being and Time, presented by leading philosopher Simon Critchley. This volume offers a comprehensive, long-form exploration of what is widely considered the most significant philosophical text of the 20th century.

Scheduled for release ahead of the 2027 centenary of Heidegger’s masterpiece, Heidegger Thinking: 'Being and Time' Explained aims to elucidate Heidegger's entire project in terms that are both understandable and practically applicable for curious lay readers. The book is structured into 18 chapters, each dedicated to a key concept such as Dasein, Being-in-the-world, Anxiety, and Ecstatic Temporality. Critchley deliberately avoids superficial pop philosophy, instead guiding readers on a slow, intimate journey through Heidegger’s famously complex architecture without compromising depth.

Originally conceived as a popular podcast series during the 2020 pandemic, resonating with themes of mortality and isolation, this text is a complete rewrite. It has been clarified and expanded, including a full scholarly apparatus suitable for independent study. Critchley’s central argument posits that 'Being is time and time is finite.' By demystifying Heidegger’s dense terminology, the book reveals how his insights into our 'thrown open clearing of finitude' can profoundly impact one's life, encouraging readers to embrace a lived, worldly experience beyond mere consciousness.

Heidegger Thinking serves as an essential guide for serious readers who recognize the importance of Heidegger’s thought but need a clear pathway through its legendary complexity.
