Mr Bongo proudly presents a reissue of Disco Party by Reality, one of the rarest releases originating from the ultra-rare TSG Records—a label with a checkered past allegedly tied to Lloyd Price and Don King. This album is a stunning sonic journey, capturing the essence of '70s dancefloor-focused funk blending seamlessly into early proto-disco grooves.
Recorded in mid-'70s Manhattan, the tracks feature Dr. Otto Gomez and a collective of New York musicians including Tony Dixon, Norman Drayton, Tony Dupree, Al Jones, and Fred Nanton. They were brought in by songwriter and producer Billy Nichols to lay down his material alongside their own compositions. Unbeknownst to the session musicians, Lloyd Price acquired the tapes and pressed the album in 1976 on the subsidiary label TSG Records, later documented as one of the US tax scam labels of the era.
Historical SignificanceReleases on tax scam labels were never intended for commercial success, often produced in incredibly limited pressings with minimal promotion, causing them to fall into obscurity and become mythical among collectors. This reissue finally gives the talents of Dr. Otto Gomez and friends the spotlight they missed in the '70s. The sessions are pure time capsule material, perfectly bridging instrumental funk edges with early disco sounds designed specifically for the dancefloor.
Key HighlightsThis edition is presented on audioCD format and contains 1 disc. The music is highly regarded, ranking #7,755 in Pop and #165 in Funk best sellers.
Experience this essential piece of '70s funk and proto-disco history with this definitive reissue from Mr Bongo.
