Henry Threadgill - Cut You Where You Was [Vinyl]

Cut You Where You Was heralds the triumphant return of saxophonist, flutist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill's seminal band, Zooid. This release marks their first since 2021's Poof and coincides with the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Up Popped the Two Lips, which was the inaugural release for Pi Recordings, founded with the specific aim of documenting Threadgill's new work.

Zooid's Evolving Sound:
The album showcases the continued maturation of Zooid's distinctive musical language. Featuring original members Liberty Ellman on guitar, Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums, and cellist Christopher Hoffman, the ensemble demonstrates a profound understanding of Threadgill's intricate compositions. They achieve their signature sound with a less rigid adherence to the interval-based compositional system that earned Threadgill a Pulitzer Prize for his acclaimed work, In for a Penny, In for a Pound.

Fascination with Early Recording:
Cut You Where You Was comprises a series of brief compositions inspired by Henry Threadgill's deep interest in early recording technologies. The concise duration of each track compels each musician to deliver their musical statements with immediacy, foregoing extended development. This deliberate limitation fosters new avenues for musical expression, solidifying Cut You Where You Was as another masterful work from one of the most significant artists of the past half-century.
